Rebecca Montaño

International Instructor, VI Degree Black Belt

 

Sabum Rebecca Montaño began learning Taekwon-Do in Broomfield, Colorado in 1985 under the instruction of Grand Master C.E. Sereff. She earned her 1st Degree (Dan) Black Belt from the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) on March 18, 1989, and graded for her 6th degree black belt November 2019. Sabum Rebecca Montaño was promoted to 6th Dan by a panel of Internation Masters and Instructors including Master Alvey, Master Hance, with President Johnson and the Technical Director of ITF-TAO Sabum Morningstar.

Sabum Rebecca Montaño is a four-time USA National Champion and an accomplished international competitor being awarded a bronze medal in Women’s 4th Degree Black Belt Patterns in the 13th ITF World Championships held in Daejon, South Korea.

Sabum Rebecca Montaño had the privilege of training under the Founder of Taekwon-Do, General Choi Hong Hi, his son Grand Master Choi Jung Hwa, as well as with First Grandmaster Rhee Ki Ha and her original instructor, Grand Master Sereff, one of the first three people promoted to Grand Master by the founder.  She was one of the honoured few to attend the General’s final instructor’s course in April 2002, less than a year before his passing.

Sabum Rebecca Montaño began teaching Taekwon-Do while studying for her Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics at the Colorado School of Mines. She obtained her master’s degree in physics at the University of New Mexico, and while there, taught for Master Charles McGinnis, VII Dan, at Albuquerque Taekwon-Do from 2000-2006. Sabum Rebecca Montaño used her extensive experience as a competitor to aid her in coaching Albuquerque Taekwon-Do Junior team members who competed at the 2006 USA Jr. Qualifiers, of which she was also the Tournament Director. She has assisted at Morningstar Taekwon-Do in Oakville and has taught introductory classes with the Waterdown Beavers and Self-Defense seminars for the Canadian Cadets, and CARE classes for Hamilton day programs. She is a certified class A International referee annually attending International Instructors Courses, as well as internationally recognized training seminars to maintain her own skills.

Montaño Taekwon-Do provides a positive, non-competitive environment for individuals, children, and families to challenge themselves physically and mentally while learning practical self-defence. As a registered dojang under ITF-TAO, Montaño Taekwon-Do teaches Chang Hun Taekwon-Do, unchanged, as developed by the Founder General Choi Hong Hi and is committed to preserving the highest standard of technical excellence in the art of Taekwon-Do. This includes Sabum Rebecca Montaño annually renewing her International Instructor certification, offering students the opportunities to attend technical seminars with the highest quality of Instructors around the world.

Founded in 2017, Montaño Taekwon – Do is named in honour of Sabum Rebecca Montaño’s late father, Master Barney Montaño. Sabum Montaño trained, competed, and travelled the world with Master ‘Pops’ Montaño for 31 years until his death in 2015. First created to provide parents a way to actively participate and train side by side with their children, Montaño Taekwon-Do now offers classes for families, individuals and children.

Head Instructor Sabum Rebecca Montaño is a certified ITF 6th Degree Black Belt, four-time USA National Champion, two-time ITF World Championship competitor and ITF World Championship Bronze medalist, Daejeon, South Korea, 2004. In addition, Sabum Rebecca Montaño is also the Director of Accessibility and Inclusion for ITF-TAO Canada.

Montaño Taekwon-Do uses traditional training methods to bring out the best in each student while promoting courteous communication in class and daily life. The spirited environment provides an opportunity for all students to set goals and develop the skills to achieve them.
